5 Things to Pack for Your First Family Ski Holiday
Share
Heading off on your first family ski holiday? Exciting! But before you start dreaming of snow-capped peaks and après-ski hot chocolates, let me tell you one thing: preparation is key. Here are five must-haves to make your trip smoother (and less expensive) while keeping everyone happy.
1. Snacks, Snacks, and More Snacks
Skiing is hungry work, especially for kids who seem to have bottomless stomachs as soon as they’re out in the fresh mountain air. And let’s not sugarcoat it—resort food is pricey. That’s why I recommend filling every nook and cranny of your luggage with snacks. Think crisps, dried fruit, chocolate buttons, and small packs of sweets. A packet of biscuits mid-ski tantrum can work wonders (for kids and parents).
No matter your budget, spending £4 on a Mars bar feels like a personal attack on your wallet.
(FYI - Not a Kids Snack!)
2. More Socks Than You Think
Trust me on this one. You’ll need way more socks than you’d ever imagine. Between skiing, snowball fights, and puddles, socks get wet fast. And drying them in the freezing alpine air takes forever. Pack double the number you think you’ll need—your toes will thank you.
3. Minimal Shoes: Snow Boots and Slippers
If you’re debating whether to bring extra shoes, don’t bother. The only footwear you’ll really need are snow boots for the great outdoors and slippers for cosy evenings inside.
I’m going to caveat this with the best intention of going to the pub or meals in the evening—we only made it out once. It’s so exhausting. Skiing made me feel at least ten years older. Trust me, hauling extra pairs of shoes that never leave the suitcase is a rookie mistake, and everywhere is setup for snow boots.
4. Carbs Are Your Best Friend
Let’s talk about meals. Food in ski resorts is eye-wateringly expensive, so it’s smart to bring staples like pasta, rice, or instant noodles to whip up in your chalet or apartment. Nothing beats a warm, carb-loaded dinner after a day on the slopes without blowing the budget.
5. Pre-Filled Digital Devices
Wi-Fi in ski resorts is famously terrible. Your kids will be exhausted after skiing, but they’ll still need some downtime—cue the iPad. Download their favourite movies and shows beforehand. A bit of screen time is a lifesaver when everyone’s wiped out and you’re trying to avoid yet another game of “What’s That Snowy Thing?”
Bonus: Matching Kids’ Hoodies
Okay, I might be biased here, but hear me out. Matching hoodies from my collection are both practical and adorable. They’re perfect for spotting your kids at the airport or on the slopes, plus they’re a lovely keepsake to remember the trip. Who doesn’t love a bit of coordinated family fun?
