Planning Your First Family Ski Holiday? Here's What We Got Right

First Family Ski Adventure in La Plagne, France

This post is a little more personal than usual because it’s about our first-ever family skiing trip. It was our first big adventure together—and yes, an expensive one at that—but it was worth every penny. Here’s how we got on, along with a list of things we did right to make the trip as smooth as possible.

What We Did Right

1. Using a Holiday Booking Agent

I find flying stressful at the best of times, so having everything arranged by a holiday booking agent was a game-changer. They ensured every detail was covered, from flights to transfers. Even when we had a two-hour delay due to the weather, all our transfers were sorted seamlessly. It made the whole experience so much easier.

2. Going with Another Family

I’ve always been a big fan of holidaying with other people, and skiing was no exception. It made everything so much easier. More adults meant more help with entertaining the kids and covering things we forgot. The kids also behaved better for others, and having children of similar ages meant they entertained each other. Plus, the mix of ages ensured some of the kids were in the same ski class, which worked out perfectly.

3. Choosing La Plagne, France

La Plagne was the ideal resort for first-time skiers like me. It had everything we needed—plenty of food places, and everything was right on our doorstep. It’s such a family-friendly destination, and I can’t recommend it enough.

4. Staying in a Ski-In and Ski-Out Apartment

This was a lifesaver with kids. Not having to lug equipment across half the resort was amazing. The idea was to ski straight out of the apartment (if you could ski—spoiler: I couldn’t). The kids loved being able to toboggan in the evenings when the main slopes had closed, which meant we didn’t need much else to keep them entertained.

5. Being Near the Kids’ Ski School

We opted for morning ski school sessions, and I’d absolutely do it again. However, getting the kids ready each morning was a mission. Imagine the school run, but five times harder—three times the layers, feeding them while they’re half-asleep, and so much equipment to carry. Thankfully, this got easier as the kids quickly learned to ski to their lessons.

6. Staying in a Central Location

Our central location made everything easier. Transfers were straightforward, food was accessible, and we avoided the dreaded bus rides. Honestly, the thought of dragging exhausted kids onto a bus after ski school is enough to put me off some resorts entirely.

Most of these things we did right were accidental rather than carefully planned, but they turned out to be brilliant decisions. I’ll definitely keep them in mind for next time and maybe even pretend I planned them all along.

Skiing with the family for the first time was a mix of chaos and magic. Sure, there were challenges (and moments of exhaustion), but seeing the kids enjoy the snow and embrace a new experience made it all worthwhile. If you’re considering a family ski trip, I hope these tips help make it a little easier. Happy skiing!
