Top Mistakes to Avoid on Your First Family Ski Trip

Things We Got Wrong On Our Ski Trip (or Would Change Next Time)

Planning our first family ski trip was a learning experience, and while we got a lot right, there were definitely some mistakes we made along the way. If you’re considering a family ski trip, here are a few lessons from our experience that might help you avoid the same pitfalls.

1. Almost Missing Our Plane

This one was completely our fault. We arrived at the airport two hours early, as recommended. Then our flight was delayed by an hour, giving us some extra time—or so we thought. My other half even managed to tip an entire drink down himself (not really something we could have planned around). When the flight was finally ready to board, we underestimated how quickly boarding would happen and didn’t account for our gate being what felt like a million miles away. We made it just in time, but it wasn’t ideal to arrive so flustered for the kids’ first-ever flight.

2. Not Considering Delays on the Other Side

After landing, we had just over an hour’s travel to reach the resort—or so we thought. Unfortunately, as soon as we hit the motorway, we hit gridlock. What should have been a quick journey took three hours. With no toilets and no snacks, it wasn’t fun. Next time, we’ll be more prepared for unexpected delays, especially when traveling with kids. A few extra snacks, water bottles, and perhaps a quick stop before hitting the road would have saved a lot of stress.

3. Underpacking Snacks

We booked four suitcases per family but only brought three. In hindsight, we should have used that extra suitcase for snacks and basics like pasta. Food at the resort was ridiculously expensive—even the basics were at least three times more expensive than at home. Packing snacks would have saved us a lot of hassle (and money). Lesson learned: always overpack snacks for ski trips.

4. Not Allowing Enough Time to Rest After the Trip

Ski holidays are amazing, but they are far from restful. We made the mistake of jumping straight back into everyday life as soon as we got home. The kids were completely wiped out, and to be honest, so were we. Skiing is exhausting—it made me feel at least ten years older! Next time, we’ll factor in a buffer day or two after the holiday to recover before tackling work, school, and the usual chaos.
